ROOK ATTACK!

“Uh… guys?  I think I just walked into a Rook attack.”

That was the first sentence I typed after opening Global Chat.  I had just walked onto Lowan Len and my screen flashed red alerting me to a “ROOK ATTACK!”  The only other time I had walked onto a street to be greeted by such a message, I was a very new Glitchen and I have to admit I ran away because I had no idea what was going on.

But this time, I was ready to meet the challenge.  I had studied Martial Imagination and even Piety.  Although I had passed my classes with flying colors, I had never used my new skills in the Real Wurld.  The only problem?  I was completely alone on the street.

With the Rook flying around and my screen flashing red, I went to the only place I knew of at the time to call for help:  Global Chat.  I described what was going on and over the next couple of minutes, the street filled up with other Glitchen, also armed with Martial Imagination and Piety.

And I still had no idea what to do.  Maybe you’ve also been playing Glitch for several weeks now and aren’t aware of what to do, either.  Seeing the Rook can be nerve-wracking for the uninitiated.  I decided to find out.

The first goal is to stun the Rook.  This is done with Martial Imagination.  When someone with this skill clicks on their Focusing Orb, others on the street should click on the orb that appears above their heads.  But beware:  one Glitch can only accept the aid of 8 players in order to stun the Rook.  If you see an Orb with an 8, don’t click on it or the stun will fail.  Wait for another orb to appear.

When the Rook is successfully stunned, you must then collectively take it down!  This is where Piety comes in.  A Glitch with Piety must “prime the shrine” and all Glitchen present then donate to the shrine.  The shrine then launches powerful attacks to kill the Rook.

I specifically wanted to know what the difference was between a “real” Rook attack, and the phenomena of a Rook visit when the Rook is rolled on a 12-sided die.  The knowledgeable folks in the Rook Alerts group had an answer:

In a real Rook attack, the rock [at the top of your screen] turns into a Rook and the screen flashes red with ROOK ATTACK!!

In a Rook roll, you might get a Rook pecking at your screen and some of the Rook attack effects like Rooked animals, but your rock doesn’t change to a Rook. Sometimes, nothing happens except the die roller loses mood.

(Thanks, Griselda!)

So those are the basics of what to do in a Rook Attack.  See more pictures of what happens in a Rook attack by Zigniber, check out the FAQ at the Glitch Strategy Wiki for more detailed info, and join Rook Alerts to get the latest.  If you open up the Rook Alerts chat window while in-game, you can alert other members if you happen to come across a Rook attack, or you can find out where an attack is taking place so you can contribute.

Good luck, fellow Glitches… and be careful out there!

Thanks, Beebs. That tombstone in the first one? Mine. Guess I wasn’t paying much attention to my energy level :-)
